Jellyfish Restaurant (123 Eagle Street, Brisbane, QLD)
I have been to Jellyfish a handful of times. Given the fairly limited choice of restaurants in Brisbane CBD, it is a popular spot for office workers for lunch and dinner alike.
I happened to be catching up with my lunch companion at Jellyfish again – and I was glad to know that it wouldn’t be the last time. First and foremost, Jellyfish is a seafood restaurant. They do have a few non-seafood dishes on the menu for the seafood-phobic but while I have no doubt that they would cook those dishes beautifully as well, you would be missing out because seafood really is their forte.
My lunch companion and I both had to work after lunch in the afternoon, so we opted for something light and non-boozy. Okay, we did have a glass of wine each but we just couldn’t resist. We both ordered one of the specials of the day – grilled Moreton Bay bug basted in chilli and garlic oil. The bugs were deliciously fresh as expected and the chilli and garlic oil really complemented the delicate crayfish flesh. They were grilled just right – not overcooked but enough to brown some of the meat.
The only downside was that while we did get two bugs on each plate, they were on the less meaty side, which left us wishing for more when we were done with our plate. I wasn’t sure if the lack of generosity evident from our lunch was a persistent issue with Jellyfish but the trout dish I ordered when I was there for dinner last was, as I recall, also on the less satisfying side despite the superb cooking.
I would have given Jellyfish a 9 but it lost a point due to its pretentiousness that is often characterised by small portions and minimal trimmings on the plate. Otherwise, I couldn’t fault the restaurant and think that it is a “must try” for seafood lovers.
