Major Cuts Butchery (25 Junction Road, Morningside, QLD)
For many of us, buying meat for meals is a necessity – but do you buy yours with your groceries at Coles or Woolworths (aka Woolies), or do you go to a dedicated butchery?
Personally, I’d always go and do the former. In my mind, butchers were ‘pointless’ and it was just easier to get the meat from Woolies. Boy how my frame of mind quickly changed! Not only are most butcheries cheaper, but their stock is also better.
I’ve seen Coles & Woolies pull some interesting tricks with their meat – like putting the massively fatty side of the meat down in the tray so you can’t see it, sourcing meat that’s pumped full of hormones (especially chicken), and so forth… so it was a nice surprise for me to visit an actual butcher (for the first time in many, many years) – that butcher being Major Cuts, at 25 Junction Road, Morningside in Queensland. To add to my surprise, I quickly realised that not only are they friendlier and cheaper than all of the Coles or Woolies stores I had been to, but that their meat is hormone and steroid free!
Major Cuts provides a large range of meats – everything from your standard pork, lamb, beef and chicken to duck, kangaroo in a variety of fashions – minced, diced, marinated, in rissole form and so on. Speaking of rissoles, they also have some really nice flavours – such as Herb & Garlic, Sundried Tomato and Mint & Rosemary. The meat is always a lot fresher, better looking and is sold with far less fat than that of those at Coles & Woolworths. The price is also cheaper – a kilogram of ‘premium’ beef mince at Woolies will generally set you back between $12 and $15 depending on the day & the location of the store. At Major Cuts, you’ll pay around $11 a kilo for the same thing.
Another bonus is the staff – they’re always incredibly friendly, chatty and are more than happy to bag your meats into smaller portions. For example, I often ask for 2x or 3x 500g bags of diced chicken breast, or minced beef etc – meaning that the quantities are ready to use / defrost from the freezer in a few weeks time. The last thing you want to do is sit there hacking away at some big block of frozen mince when you only want to use half of it!
No matter what you feel like having for dinner or lunch, Major Cuts will have something for you – whether it’s some Cheesy Kransky’s, some ham, bacon, cheerios, minced beef, seasoned lamb chops, chicken Kiev’s, marinated chicken skewers, and their awesome 10/10 marinated tandoori chicken breasts (my flatmate is particularly good at making delicious tandoori chicken burgers with cheese, thanks to Major Cuts’ marinated breasts of the same name). For their friendliness, value for money and their quality (hormone and steroid free) meats, I’m giving Major Cuts a 9 out of 10. Mind you, they only loose a point because a) there could be something better and I need something to go to if that happens, and b) compared to some butchers out there, they may lack size and variety. They have everything I need, but some may want more. All in all, Major Cuts are fantastic – make a trip out there today!
